Short biography of  Saramago’s childhood in Lisbon and the countryside of Portugal, a country he was exiled from until his death. Intimate stories about family life and early loves help to shape the character of the author, and this is certainly a book for fans of the writer. Pleasantly written with beautiful imagery, but lacks the excitement of his fiction.
