Thomson is an informed and diligent anthropologist, and his insight into Jamaica’s colonial and post-colonial history and culture is attentive for a reader new to Caribbean history. Focuses more on the history of Jamaica than “Modern Tales” suggests, perhaps because as a middle-aged white man he is ill-suited to investigative work in the island’s slums.
