The Victorian writing style stilts this slow-paced horror story, which is fairly predictable to a modern-day reader. However, Collins succeeds in creating a genuinely spooky atmosphere and a formidable character in the form of the countess. It’s an entertaining, enjoyable and forgettable novel.
